ABOUT THE BUILD
Urban infill is always most interesting when you re-imagine a heritage building in an old neighborhood. This building began as a horse barn to serve local Madisonians in the early 1900s with daily deliveries of milk. Acting as the meeting ground between the rich rural farming communities serving the booming urban growth of our new state capital, this building has served the maturation of Madison for over a century. In 1985 the Hoffman-Kennedy Dairy Horse Barn had fallen to a state of disrepair and severe deterioration when the property was purchased by Joe Krupp with the intent of repurposing the space to be used as a 3-story corporate headquarters for a large company.
After going vacant in 2023, a new vision for the building came to life. Converting the top two floors into a residential condo with a full roof top urban farm above a first-floor office space use. Still holding onto some of the quarks of an office in an old horse barn, we were able to introduce modern steel structure to strengthen the charming old wood structure. Starting a new chapter of another 100 years, this building will serve this neighborhood.
